Recreational boating is very popular, especially here in Austin, where we have great weather year-round and gorgeous lakes to explore. With that being said, most people who rent boats for recreational activities or parties are rarely aware of any boat etiquette or unspoken rules—which is entirely normal; we’re not taught these things in school.
However, whether you’re renting a boat for a day out on the lake with family and friends or attending an event on a boat as a guest—it’s a good idea to follow some simple boating rules to make the activity fun and safe for everyone aboard.
Here are the most important ones you need to keep in mind.
Don’t Ruin Other Boaters’ Experiences
Keep in mind that a lake is a public space, and other people are there to enjoy it the same way you are. So, when boating, it’s essential to keep a reasonable distance—ideally about 200 feet from the shore and other boaters.
Throwing a big wave at another boat or swimmers or making sharp turns can ruin the experience for other people, and it could even be dangerous—so, be polite, wave but stay at a safe distance.
Do NOT Litter
This goes without saying, but littering offshore is just as bad as littering onshore, probably worse because it can be harder to clean up. It’s okay to carry food, water and other necessities on board, but always keep trash bags to dispose of litter properly when you’re onshore.
Always Be Ready To Help
Being friendly and helping each other is an integral part of boating culture, so it’s crucial to offer help to other boaters whenever you think they could use some help. This applies both on water, at the dock and could mean sharing necessary gear or tools.
Also, keep in mind that in some places, stopping to help isn’t just common courtesy but the law.
Don’t Be The Latecomer
If you’ve been invited for a boat party or a casual day out on the lake by a friend or family member, don’t be the one who arrives late. There’s nothing worse than being all ready to depart, then having to wait for one person—and trust us, you don’t want to be that person.
This is especially important to keep in mind if someone has rented the boat for the day. Boat rentals are usually charged by the hour and wasting time at the dock can be frustrating for those who are waiting.
Now that you know these basic rules, we believe you’re all ready to hop on board!
